In the private sector, employers generally have no duty to provide any kind of benefit. You are not entitled to vacation, sick time, health benefits, a pension or severance pay. But, if the employer does provide any such benefits, the employer is required to follow certain rules. For example, an employer cannot arbitrarily decide to provide certain favored employees with health benefits but not others.
